June 2014 Newsletter www.botbrain.com

Hello all, in this month’s newsletter I would like to give you some data that has been made available to me.  There are a number of technical gurus (nerds) at BotBrain Educational Robots and we love data.  We especially love to read statistics or projections about the growth of the robotic market; however, it is not all about robots but about all the technologies, the advancement of human well-being and economic growth involved with robots.  Outlined below are some projections from a report by Business Insider Intelligence titled Beyond Factory Robots: Market and Growth Trends for Consumer and Office Robots.
  • The market for consumer and office robots will grow at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 17% from the years 2014 – 2019.
  • The ubiquity of smartphones and tablets has made it easier to develop robots for consumer applications.
  • Artificial intelligence and navigation systems have advanced to allow for the development of semi-autonomous systems.
These are just a few projections from the report.  This is very exciting for many of us who follow technology and are responsible for teaching our students the skills and disciplines necessary to develop the next great technological advancement.
Using a project based learning activity such as building and programming a robot involves many academic and high level technical disciplines such as:
  • Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes constraints.
  • Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem.
  • Plan and implement a test which control variables for improved solutions.
I frequently use our BotBrain Educational Robots to teach the aerospace course in the U.S. Civil Air Patrol to our middle and high school cadets.  It’s a great way to show how the various scientist concepts are applied in different application to solve engineering challenges.
