Look Down on Yourself with a Robot Airplane
You could be looking at yourself or your house from 400 feet up. It isn’t just the military gets to have fun with robot aircraft. Predators launching missiles and aerial spy craft have certainly been in the news lately. But you can build a robot aircraft yourself (please, no missles!). It’s not that hard and it’s not that expensive. There is an active group of amateurs building and flying UAV’s (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). Their headquarters is at http://diydrones.com and it has over 700 members.
To get started you need these items: a radio control (RC) aircraft and an autopilot. It can be a standard airplane, a helicopter, a blimp or something more exotic. It can carry GPS for navigation and an onboard camera. As long as it stays below 400 feet and other rules are followed, it is legal. For information on getting started see this link: http://diydrones.com/profiles/blogs/a-newbies-guide-to-uavs
